Sasha a Body as Haven

"Sasha is a character I created in 2021 as a form of self-therapy, a vessel through which I project emotions, desires, and unconscious states. Rooted in surrealism, Sasha’s anatomy appears distorted and hybrid, translating inner experience into visual form.

Within the theme of Havens, Sasha becomes more than a figure; the body itself becomes a shelter. The ever-present eye reflects the observer I am, a state of awareness that watches and endures. The wings embody the free spirit, the impulse to escape, to imagine elsewhere. The elongated and transforming body responds to each emotional condition, constructing a private inner territory when external reality feels unstable.

Rather than depicting a physical refuge, Sasha represents the mental and emotional spaces we build to survive uncertainty, a fragile but persistent inner haven. Through this character, I explore how the mind, memory, and imagination become places of protection, intimacy, and quiet resistance".

About Joseph Ghobeira

Joseph Ghobeira (b. 1988, Lebanon) is a multidisciplinary artist with a master’s degree in interior design from the Lebanese University. After spending eight years in the design field, he founded his studio in 2018, marking the beginning of his full commitment to art.

His work spans painting, tattooing, and mixed media, characterized by bold colors and surreal, expressive styles. Through hybrid figures, such as half-human, half-tree beings and human-headed birds, Joseph explores themes of rootedness, emotional liberation, and transformation. His use of drawing, inks, acrylics, and collage creates layered compositions that reflect the tension between confinement and freedom, inviting viewers into a world where human form and nature intertwine.

In addition to his practice, Joseph is a dedicated fine arts teacher, imparting his knowledge at prestigious institutions like Lycée Libano-Allemand Jounieh and Saints-Coeurs Sioufi.

Joseph’s work has been featured in the #4 issue of L'Art et le Monde and the virtual exhibition Vivid Vision (May 2024), curated by The Galleria Beirut. He has also showcased his art in solo exhibitions, including Kulturzentrum Jounieh (Oct 2023) and Institut Français du Liban, Jounieh (Jan 2024).

Joseph’s art offers an introspective exploration of emotion, identity, and transformation, encouraging viewers to reflect on their connections to the past, nature, and the body.
