“Refuge” depicts a woman curled up between the branches of a cedar tree, shining through the darkness. This artwork was drawn in 2020 after the blast of the Beirut port, at a time when the only place I found peace and safety was in the Cedars of God forest of Bsharre.
Away from the destruction and the heaviness of the capital, “Refuge” symbolizes the comfort and psychological empowerment that women can get from nature. Walking between the hundred-year-old cedar trees and seeing them standing tall after all those years is a real representation of strength and resilience, a true inspiration.
Charcoal and Pencils with a 4 cm white border & non-reflective glass).
About Chloé Sleilati
Chloé Sleilati is a freelance Lebanese illustrator and comic artist based in Beirut. Trained at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA), her work is mostly inspired by the flora and fauna she meets through various hikes and trips. Everything is a source of inspiration, from the smallest insect to the great outdoors.
Working most of the time traditionally with pencils or colored pencils on paper, her work is delicate with a developed eye for details and a strong sense of color.
In her new series in black and white, she depicts women finding peace and comfort in cedars, shining through the darkest times.
