Breaking Barriers at Kulturnest with Nada Raphael

Breaking Barriers at Kulturnest with Nada Raphael

On August 8, 2024, Kulturnest’s Cine Club hosted a thought-provoking session that impacted all attendees. Co-organized with Electrochocks Productions and animated by the talented Nada Raphael, the event centered around the screening of her acclaimed documentary "Hyphen Islam-Christianity." This documentary delves deep into the complex narratives of coexistence and the often-overlooked stories of conviviality between Muslims and Christians in Lebanon, beyond the more commonly highlighted wars and crises.

The screening was followed by an engaging discussion with the participants, where Raphael emphasized the importance of deconstructing stereotypes and broadening our understanding of Lebanon's diverse social fabric. The conversation touched on the critical role oral histories play in preserving these narratives of peaceful coexistence, challenging the often monolithic portrayal of Lebanon as a country defined by conflict.

In addition to the documentary, Raphael introduced her book "Hyphen Islam-Christianity," which further explores these themes in greater detail. The evening concluded with a book signing, where attendees had the chance to meet the author, discuss her work, and gain insights into her creative process.

This Cine Club session was not just a screening but a powerful reminder of the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the rich tapestry of Lebanon’s cultural and religious diversity. At Kulturnest, we are committed to fostering dialogue and understanding through such meaningful cultural initiatives, and we look forward to continuing this journey with our community.
